Campaigns
Academic and educational rights are most frequently abused at the hand of repressive regimes, often during times of political instability. Academics, educators, students and unionists can face curtailment of their research activities, detention or in the most extreme cases, even murder. Infringements of this kind demand worldwide publicity and immediate action. Through its website, NEAR brings international attention to violations of academic freedom and educational rights. In this new campaigns section, NEAR hopes to provide its members with useful resources to launch their own campaigns against countries which show a persistent lack of respect for rights in academia and education.
IRAN Campaign Documents
Respect for human rights in Iran, especially with regards to students and academics, has deteriorated rapidly in recent times. Since the widely disputed June Presidential election the Iranian authorities have consistently tried to stifle dissent and clamp down on freedom of expression. Hundreds of academics and students have found themselves detained without charge simply for expressing their views in a peaceful manner. Many of these detainees are suffering inhumane conditions in prison.
NEAR would like to offer its members the following catalogue of information on Iran. The documents are designed to help individuals and organisations launch their own campaigns. They include a country profile, a historical timeline, individual case studies, information on international treaties and much more. If you have any questions about the documents, or require further information or advice please contact NEAR at contact@nearinternational.org
