Campaign for Academics and Students in Iran

This week thousands of pro-government Iranians are rallying to mark the 31st anniversary of the nation's revolution. The events if 1979 transformed Iran from a monarchy under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi to an Islamic republic under Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. The Iranian opposition movement is expected to use the celebrations as an opportunity to protest against the present government, despite threats of a widespread crackdown and restrictions on phone and internet networks. NEAR is concerned for the safety of the many academics and students who may legitimately voice their opinions.
In response to the threats issued by the Iranian government, NEAR has published a catalogue of documents about Iran, including a country profile, a historical timeline, individual case studies and information on international treaties. The documents are designed to help individuals and organisations launch their own campaigns.
