On December 14th 2007 they were sentenced for their participation in teacher union rallies, which called for improved living conditions for teachers and respect for their right to form a labour association.

EI have said that some of these teachers have also received disciplinary sentences from the Administrative Disciplinary Board. Yousef Zareie has been displaced for 36 months to Ilam; Nader Ghadimi has been displaced for 60 months to Northern Khorasan; Hadi Gholami has been suspended for 12 months and Yousef Refahiyat has had his pay cut two grades.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The participation of teachers and academics in nationwide protest movements over work conditions has sparked a violent backlash from the government. Threats, beatings, arrests, dismissals and suspension of teachers have become common practice all over Iran. According to EI, over 700 teachers who have been identified in the protests have had pay cuts, 86 teachers have been suspended and 39 teachers have been banned from teaching.

Education International and NEAR deplore the continuing intimidation and persecution of teachers and human rights defenders in Iran.
