Iran: US-Iranian Academic Released on Bail

Authorities in Iran have released a US-Iranian scholar detained in a Tehran prison for over four months. Kian Tajbakhsh, a planning consultant at the Soros Foundation’s Open Society Institute, was freed from the notorious Evin prison on bail for around $100,000. He had been accused of helping to organise a revolution - an accusation that he vehemently denied.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Mr Tajbakhsh was one of four US-Iranian academics charged with spying and endangering national security, the BBC have stated. His release follows the liberation of Haleh Esfandiari, Director of the Middle East Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center in Washington, who was imprisoned until 21 August 2007. US-Iranian journalist Parnaz Azima has also been released, leaving Mr Ali Shakeri as the last remaining detainee.

The charges imposed by the Iranian authorities have rapidly increased tensions between Iran and the United States. Tensions are already high amid claims that Tehran is arming militants in Iraq and seeking to develop nuclear weapons. Mr Tajbakhsh’s release comes only days ahead of a visit by Iran’s president to the UN General Assembly in New York.
