BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Last Tuesday a Rajshahi court sentenced the teachers to two years imprisonment for violating emergency laws by encouraging and participating in a silent procession on campus. The August 20-22 unrest began at Dhaka University after an alleged assault on students by troops during a football match. The protests that ensued forced the emergency government to impose a curfew in major cities.
Four university professors from Bangladesh’s largest university in Dhaka have also appeared in court on charges of inciting violence in August. The case against the four Dhaka professors and 15 students has been adjourned until 17 December, the BBC has said. URGENT
