The right to education is routinely violated in Nepal where for the last nine years a conflict has raged between government security forces and fighters of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist). Amnesty International reports that this conflict has had a ‘devastating effect on all sections of Nepali society—but especially on the lives of children’.
Nepali Students and Political Leaders Arrested and Under Thread

At least 150 political leaders and student activists have been arbitrarily detained or placed under house arrest since last week's seizure of power by King Gyanendra and the Royal Nepalese Army, Human Rights Watch declared. The organisation commented that with ongoing arrests reported around the country, there is a risk that some of those being arrested will be "disappeared" by the security forces and never seen again, as it happened during Nepal's last state of emergency in 2001.

Amnesty International has received reports that Maha Prasad Angai, a Nepalese teacher, is currently being held in the custody of the Royal Nepal Army's (RNA), at Baireni army camp, in Dhading district. He was reportedly arrested by security forces personnel in plain clothes on 7 November 2003 whilst walking in Sorahkutte, Kathmandu.
Nepali Teacher Held Incommunicado

Mr Tula Thapa, a 36 year old teacher, and other three men (Rajendra Adhikari, Ram Bahadur Rana, and Man Bahadur Shah) were arrested on 1 February in the far west of Nepal. Amnesty International declares that several witnesses have reported that all four are being tortured in police custody. Relatives and lawyers have been denied access to the men, and so far the police have not presented them before any court.
Student Threatened by Nepalese Security Forces Kills Himself

Amnesty International has received reports that Naresh Maharjan, a Nepalese student, killed himself on 9 January, one month after he was released. He appears to have taken his own life to escape threats and harassment by the security forces. Amnesty International has received information that following his release he was harassed by security forces personnel who asked him to contact them regularly.

Pashupati Dhungana, a Nepalese teacher reportedly arrested on 25 September as he returned home from the Shiddi Ganesh Secondary School, in Paknajol, Kathmandu was released on 2 January. Amnesty International has not received any further details of his arrest or his place of detention. His family passed on their thanks for all the work put into campaigning for his release.
Fate of Nepalese Teacher Still Unknown

Amnesty International informed that Hari Dev Mandal, a teacher arrested the 26 September 2003 by the Nepalese authorities for no know reason, was reportedly released from army custody at 2pm on 11 November, in the presence of his relatives. He was held at Viman army barracks in Dhanusha. Reports suggest that he was kept blindfolded for the first 13 days of his detention.
Two Nepalese Teachers Disappear

Amnesty International issued an action alert fearing for the safety of two Nepalese teachers who were reportedly arrested on 25 and 26 September in Nepal; the whereabouts of Pashupati Dhugana and Hari Dev Mandal are unconfirmed. It is believed that Pashupati Dhungana is being held at the Bhairabnath Gana battalion in Majarajgunj in Kathmandu, but the authorities have not confirmed his whereabouts.
Former Teacher and Human Rights Activist Shrestha Released

Amnesty International has issued the following alert-update on 17 December 2002. Former secondary school teacher and human rights activist Bishnu Pukar Shrestha was released on 16 December 2002. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Bishnu Pukar Shrestha was arrested by plainclothes security personnel at his rented apartment in Kathmandu on 29 July.
Fears for Former School Teacher

Amnesty International are concerned about the safety of Bishnu Pukar Shrestha (m), a former secondary school teacher and human rights activist and issued the following alert on 31 July 2002. Bishnu Pukar Shrestha was arrested by plainclothes security forces personnel at 5.00pm on 29 July 2002 at his rented apartment in Thapatali, Kathmandu.
Nepalese Teachers in Less Danger of Torture

Amnesty International (AI) UK, issued an update regarding the status of the Nepales teachers Thakur Prasad Kandel, Tanka Prasad Devkota and Badri Bahadur Pandey on 5 June 2002. Concern for the teacher's safety was raised in an alert in january 2002. AI reported that the teachers are now known to have been trasferred to Gorkha district jail in January 2002, and believes they are now in much less danger of torture or 'disappearance'.
