Academics from UK universities have called for the release of Dr Binayak Sen, the first Indian recipient of the 2008 Jonathan Mann award for Global Health and Human Rights. Dr Sen has been a political prisoner since 14 May 2007 and has been denied bail and appropriate medical treatment.

Child Slaves Abandoned to India’s Silk Industry

Human Rights Watch released a report yesterday stating that the Indian government is failing to protect the rights of hundreds of thousands of children who toil as virtual slaves in the country’s silk industry. At every stage of the silk industry, bonded children as young as five years old work 12 or more hours a day, six and a half or seven days a week.
