Student Activist Held in Tunisia at Risk of Torture

Mohammed Soudani, a member of the General Union of Tunisian Students, was arrested following a meeting with journalists three days before the presidential elections in Tunisia. According to Amnesty International, the Tunisian activist has not been seen since 22 October 2009 and it is thought that he is being held at the State Security Department of the Ministry of the Interior, where torture is common.

The IFEX Tunisian Monitoring Group (TMG) members welcomed the announcement of Tunisia’s President Ben Ali on 27 May 2005 to abolish the legal submission procedure (and related sanctions) applicable to the press. However, the organisation’s members remain concerned that the Tunisian legal submission system continues to be used as an indirect form of censorship for other media, in particular books.

Amnesty International (UK) issued an alert on the 18 June 2002 raising concerns about the risk to torture and disappearance faced by a former Tunisian teacher Moncef Chaker, aged 40. Police arrested Moncef Chaker on the morning of 31 May 2002, in the coastal village of Bakalta in eastern Tunisia.

Amnesty International reported on the 18th June that Moncef Chaker, the Tunisian teacher arrested on the 31st May, was released on the 14th June. Following intimidation whilst in prison, he decided to remain in hiding after his release, and it was not known he was free until the 18th June.

Dr Moncef Marzouki, a former professor of medicine at the University of Sousse in Tunisia, has been subject to an ongoing campaign of harassment by the authorities because of his human rights activities. A previous president of the Tunisian Human Rights League (LTDH) and spokesperson for the National Council for Liberties in Tunisia (CNLT), he has suffered intimidation and repression.
