Amnesty Amnesty International has issued on 13 December 2002 the following news alert. On the eve of the resumption of proceedings in the appeal trial of scores of professionals and students charged in connection with the banned Libyan Islamic Group, al-Jama'a al-Islamiya al-Libiya, Amnesty International today urged the authorities to ensure a fair trial and to quash the two death sentences handed down in the original trial.
Two Academics Sentenced to Death

Amnesty International reported in an urgent action on 20 February 2002 that two possible prisoners of conscience, Abdullah Ahmed Izzedin and Salem Abu Hanak, were sentenced to death before a People’s Court in Tripoli following an unfair trial. Abdullah Ahmed Izzedin, a lecturer at the Engineering Faculty of Tripoli, and Salem Abu Hanak, head of the Chemistry Department at the Faculty of Science of the University of Qar Younes, were among 152 professionals and students arrested in and after June 1998, on suspicion of supporting or sympathising with the banned Libyan Islamic Group, al-Jama’a al Islamiya al-Libiya, also known as Muslim Brothers, al-Ikhwan al-Muslimin.
