Around 300 Students Arrested During Protest March

Around 3 million students gathered in the centre of Chile’s capital Santiago during a one day strike called for on 18 October 2006. They were dispersed by police with tear gass and water. According to Chilean Home Office a total of 291 students have been arrested but media reports give a higher number.

700 Students Arrested After Violent Protests

News agencies inform that in Chile more than 700 students have been arrested in the capital, Santiago, and hundreds of schools across the country have been closed as some 500,000 pupils staged a strike, pressing for education reforms. Protests began several weeks ago when students took over several schools in Santiago, and their strike has now spread nationwide with many pupils staying in school but refusing to attend lessons.

54 Academics Unfairly Dismissed at the University of Chile

A group of academics, who were appointed by the University’s Rector to restructure the Faculty of Social Sciences have dismissed, in March this year, 54 academics of the Faculty, all of whom have the highest professional reputations.
