The American Association for the Advancement of Science issued an action alert on 21 October 2002 regarding the unlawful dismissal of Professor Debora an anthropologist and bioethicist. Professor Diniz was fired from her position as a professor at the Catholic University in Brasilia on 7 September 2002, apparently in retaliation for her participation in a public debate about abortion in March 2001.

Anthropologist Receives Death Threats

Amnesty International (AI) released the following action alert on the 17 July 2002 raising concerns about the safety of Dr. Mariana Ferreira, anthropological and ethnological researchers working in Sangradouro indigenous territory, and Hiparidi Top'tiro and members of his family. Death threats have been received by Hiparidi Top'tiro, an indigenous leader from the Sangradouro indigenous reserve in Primavera do Leste, Mato Grosso state, his family, and Dr Mariana Ferreira, an anthropologist from the University of Tennessee who has been working in the area.

Leader of Teacher’s Trade Union Shot and Wounded

Amnesty International (AI) reported in an Urgent Action of the 9th January 2001 that local councillor (vereador) Zito Augusto Correia, also known as `Zitinho', was shot and wounded on 12 December 2001, in his house in Canaa dos Carajás, Pará state. Zito Augusto is a leader of the Sindicato dos Trabalhadores em Educaçao Pública do estado de Pará (SINTEPP), Pará state Teachers' Union.
