Bulgarian Teachers on Hunger Strike for Better Wages
Action Alert
Date: 30 November 2005
Education International informs that from 21 to 24 November 2005 teachers belonging to the Bulgarian Teachers’ Trade Union (SEB) demonstrated in front of the Council of Ministers’ building to protest at the government’s policy that condemns Bulgarian teachers to poverty and misery. EI explains that while the inflation rate is very high, with an increase of 40% in the price of central heating and an increase of 20% in fuel prices, the government has only offered a 6% pay rise to teachers as of July 2006 and plans to spend about 4% of GDP on education next year.
